Religion in the Realm is a rich tapestry of belief, devotion and ritual. The gods of the Realm rarely act directly, yet their influence is pervasive. The work of the gods is mostly done by their mortal agents, foremost among them being the clerics blessed by divine favors.
The Nature of Gods and Divine Magic
Each culture and religion has their own beliefs about what their gods truly are. Some consider the gods to be the creators of the world and everything on it, others think of their gods as powerful spiritual patrons, and other still consider their gods to be the embodiments of ideals or philosophies. Some do not believe in gods at all, and attribute the divine to being just another manifestation of magic and will. The idea of godhood is further complicated by the existence of numerous faiths that don’t worship a deity, but rather adheres to a philosophy or code of behavior.
Any of these theories (or some of them or none of them) may be valid explanations, but the truth is ultimately unknown. For most, the gods simply are; clerics are granted power and oracles are granted visions, divine emissaries carry out inscrutable tasks , deific will manifests itself in the forms of miracles and blasphemies, and disasters (natural or otherwise) occur when the gods are displeased. Thankfully, such blatant displays of power are somewhat rare, as even the most active deific force rarely directly interacts with the mortal world, preferring to act through mortal agents, primarily divine spellcasters and the similarly blessed.
Most religions are native to a particular region, or practiced by a particular race. But particularly devout worshippers are often well traveled, and frequently discuss their beliefs with others. Occasionally these encounters lead to conversions. As a result, it is not unusual to find individuals or groups that worship gods and follow codes that originated in distant lands and among strange beings. It isn’t unusual to encounter human barbarians that revere Thuul, Ratmen who worship Sern or many other surprising permutations of faith.
Worshiping a Pantheon
Clerics who worship a pantheistic religion may choose to venerate the entire pantheon rather than a specific patron. These clerics may choose their domains from among all the domains offered by deities of that pantheon. The Clerics choosing an alignment domain must have a matching alignment. Clerics worshiping a pantheon do not gain access to any of the Subdomains granted by the Gods of that pantheon.
