Half-Orc Core Race SRD
The Half-Orcs of the Realm are a hardy race that is considered by some to embody the best traits of their Human and Orc ancestors. Others believe they embody the worst traits as well.Most Half-Orcs find a place within Human or Orc society, often rising to positions of leadership thanks to their combination of orcish drive and human intellect. Many Half-Orcs use their talents to become outlaws while others strive to downplay their feral looks and fiery tempers to become members of polite society. In all cases, a Half Orc is a creature at war with themselves, seeking to find a balance within their often divided natures.
The Half Orc’s of the Realm generally conform to traditional Half Orc appearance; both genders of Half-Orc stand between 6 and 7 feet tall, with powerful builds and greenish or grayish skin. Their canines often grow long enough to protrude from their mouths, and these “tusks,” combined with heavy brows and slightly pointed ears, give them their notoriously bestial appearance. Their style of dress is usually dictated by their native culture, but many half orcs adopt a more extreme version of local fashion to heighten (or subdue) their often intimidating presence.
Most Half-Orcs are raised are part of the culture of whichever parent was responsible for them. While Orcs often value the Half Orcs intelligence, and humans admire the Half Orcs strength, they are often outsiders, never belonging entirely to either half of their heritage. The largest exception to this is the Half Orc Tribe known as Zu Hsu Hai.
For good or for ill, Half Orc are the products of whatever society raised them, and are burdened with that society’s stereotypes and prejudices. Even within their native cultures, many Half Orcs have difficult lives and many learn to sympathize with others who could be considered outcastes and outsiders.
Alignment & Religion
While Half Orcs may be of any alignment, there is a fury in their Orc blood that makes most Half Orcs Chaotic. However, a surprising number of them are sincerely Lawful. Most Half Orcs are drawn to religions that exalt combat and warfare, but can follow whatever faith they choose.
Half-Orcs speak Orc, Western and at least one other human language (Central, Eastern, Northern, Southern, or Wyr). Many learn Dwarven, Giant, Gnoll, and Goblin as well.
Half Orcs have the diversity of their human heritage, but are often drawn to warfare, and most are Barbarians, Fighters, or Rangers. Some Orc tribes are widely known for their talent as riders and archers, and tend to specialize in those abilities. Spellcasters are almost always Clerics or Druids. Orc Sorcerers or Wizards are uncommon, and Orc Paladins are rare but not unheard of.
Alternative Racial Traits
All Half-Orcs in the Realm setting receive the following trait.
Low-Light Vision: Half -Orcs can see twice as far as humans in conditions of dim light. This replaces Darkvision.
Fearless: Half-Orcs receive a + 2 racial bonus on all saving throws against fear and intimidation.
Orcish Strength: Half Orcs gain a + 2 modifier to Strength checks.
Weapon Familiarity: Half Orcs are always proficient with great axes and longbows, and treat any weapon with the word “orc” in its name as a martial weapon. They also make use a martial weapon called the Kopak (an iron studded wooden club that uses the same statistics as the Tetsubo).
