The Jiaoro, as far as anyone can tell, are a seemingly young race, with the earliest known encounter with them being only 300 years ago. Since then, their numbers have expanded and they can be found nearly anywhere within their normal range (primarily the Horizon Lands and Southern Reach). when asked of their origins, they simple respond that “they are the Great Weavers gift, and that is enough”.
The are known for being calculating and clever, with keen minds that observe much and forget little. Their sensibilities are frequently considered macabre and cruel, and the often regard other races with curiosity, but little true empathy.
The Jiaoro are a combination of alluring and repulsive. They are Aberrations, their bodies being a blend of humanoid and arachnid traits, with some features that are not analogous to either. Physically, they are of roughly human stature, but slender, with bones that are partially hollow (and as glossy as dark glass). Both males and females of the breed are androgynous, making it difficult for outsiders to tell the genders apart. The hair of the head grows long, dark, and silky (males and career warriors traditionally keep their hair cropped close or shaved). Their faces are humanlike, but with an alien aspect added by their eyes (which contain two sets of corneas in colors such as black, yellow, green or red, and a secondary set of small arachnoid eyes just below the hairline on the forehead). Their mouth and jaws are also altered, containing sharp fangs and a fully bifurcated lower jaw to aid feeding and administering a toxic bite. Their bodies demonstrate the same range of coloration as humans and has light plates of dark chitin (often patterned with bright markings in white, orange, yellow, green, blue or red) on the limbs, chest, neck, and back. The fingers, palms toes, and pads of the feet have retractable talons that aid climbing. They have a spinneret organ located in the small of the back that produces silk. Even stranger, the Jiaoro have redundant organs, with an extra heart and kidney
The Jiaoro are primarily nocturnal, their sensitive eyes finding bright light uncomfortable. Their feeding habits are vampiric, preferring to sup the life fluids of living or recently expired prey. While capable of drinking cold blood, they prefer it fresh and warm. While capable of eating more standard fare (particularly enjoying fish, meats and succulent fruits), heavily fibrous or starchy vegetation upsets their digestion.
Jiaoro reproduce sexually, with the female having a gestation period of usually 7 months. The female can have up to 5 fertilized embryos at once, but by the time of the birth only the strongest fetus will remain, having cannibalized its siblings in the womb. Despite this, Female Jiaoro are capable of full activity even late into the pregnancy. Jiaoro are capable of interbreeding with humans, but the resultant offspring are almost always Jiaoro. Human mothers carrying a Jiaoro child have incredibly difficult and painful pregnancies, with most not surviving childbirth.
Jiaoro mature and age at a similar rate to humans, but often live somewhat longer.
The Jiaoro are a matriarchal society, with females taking the lead in business, politics and religion. While males are valued and have little bias against them, their fewer numbers (female Jiaoro outnumber males 3 to 1) makes it harder for them to take a greater role in their society. As a result, the Jiaoro have little concept of marriage, but females often compete to gain and retain the attention of particularly strong and capable sires for their children.
The Jiaoro hold a special place in their culture for Ettercaps and other spider-like creatures, who they see a crude early attempts by the Weaver to create her own race. Such beings often serve the Jiaoro as advisers, soldiers and minions.

Nearly all Jiaoro venerate the Weaver of Shadows to some degree, seeing the goddess as their literal creator. The rare few who do not typically shun worship entirely, seeing it as another extreme best avoided.
