The Jotun were the result of human and giant comingling long ago. The original offspring of these unions came together to eventually form tribes of their own and developed their own culture. They occupy the Godshadow Mountains and have feuded for centuries with the inhabitants of the surrounding low lands. As resources in the high elevations are often scarce, the Jotun are notorious bandits and raiders. They respect strength and physical prowess, and are often contemptuous of smaller, weaker creatures.
Jotun are massive; heavily muscled they stand between 7 to 8 feet tall and typically weigh between 270-350 lbs with little appreciable difference between males and females size wise. Their features tend to be rugged, with heavy brows, wide mouths, and pronounced noses being common. Their skin is gray, brown, or stark white, and is mottled with darker patches. They have gleaming blue or green eyes, and their skin is speckled with lithoderms; coin-sized growths of bone that appear like pebbles studding their arms, shoulders, torso, and head. Male Jotun are typically bald or balding, and females have dark hair they typically grow long and wear in braids.
Strength is everything to the Jotun. Their entire society is based upon domination and submission, with the most physically powerful or mentally cunning Jotun lording over the weaker and slower. Status is recorded with elaborate tattoos that serve as a record of a Jotun’s deeds. Disgraced Jotun are often exiled until they can prove their worth and many such exiles throw themselves into suicidal battles hoping to redeem themselves in death.
Generally speaking, the Jotun’s social attitudes make them poor neighbors. Those who submit to them can expect to be bullied, while those who fight them may gain their respect, but probably won’t make them back down. Barbarians and Fighters of all races are respected (as true warriors), but they have a hard time taking elves and most small races (such as Halflings and Gnomes) seriously.
Alignment & Religion
The majority of Jotun are Chaotic Neutral or True Neutral. A sizable portion of them are either Neutral Evil or Chaotic Evil, and sincerely Good Jotun are a distant minority.
Jotun are clannish, and many never travel more than a few days away from where they were born. Most Jotun adventurers are exiles seeking to prove themselves or expatriates who have grown tired of the harsh simplicity of mountain life. Jotun spellcasters are most often Clerics or Druids (they consider arcane magic to be a rare gift and few are permitted to learn it) and most martial Jotun are Barbarians and Rangers.
