Languages fall into the following categories based upon how widespread and commonly used the language is. Certain languages and dialects may belong to multiple categories.
Common: The language is spoken widely across cultural and racial lines, allowing ease of communication.
Culture: The language is spoken almost exclusively within a particular cultural group. Learning it require routine contact with that group.
Non Literate: The language is exclusively verbal, and does not have a written form beyond rudimentary pictographs.
Obscure: The language is rare; it has either fallen into disuse, or is used by a small group that is reluctant to share it with outsiders.
Planar: The language is spoken primarily by outsiders or other being not native to the Material Plane.
Race: The language is strongly associated with a particular race, and every member of that race is considered fluent barring extenuating circumstances.
Scholar: The Language is commonly used by the well-educated, and is typically used in writing more often than it is spoken.
It is assumed that Adventurers are literate in any language they can speak. For the rest of the Realm, that skill is far less common. Only the larger and more progressive of settlements have anything approaching a system of formal education established. Even in those environments, such education is often only available to the wealthy, well connected, or otherwise advantaged. Along racial lines, long lived races (such as Elves and Dwarves) have a higher incidence of literacy while shorter lived races (such as Goblins, Orcs and often Humans) tend to have lower literacy rates.
